چکیده

Low birth weight is associated with cardiovascular disease in adulthood, but the mechanisms underlying these associations remain unclear. One possibility is that poor intrauterine nutrition “programmes” adult disease. An alternative hypothesis is that specific polymorphisms with pleiotrophic effects result in both small birth size and cardiovascular disease risk. Epidemiological evidence for a genetic role in the association comes from the recent finding that offspring birth weight predicts parental cardiovascular disease risk. 4 As an infant’s low birth weight cannot determine its own parents’ risk of cardiovascular disease through intrauterine programming, a plausible explanation for these trans-generational associations is that of a common genetic link. In this paper we investigate the associations between offspring birth weight and parental carotid intima media thickness, an indicator of pre-clinical disease.

Birth weight, components of height and coronary heart disease: evidence from the Whitehall II study.

BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested that shorter leg length, not trunk length, may explain the inverse association between height and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. However, investigation of the importance of birth weight for these associations has been limited. This study examines associations of measures of stature and birth weight with CHD risk factors (measures of blood pressure ...

Lipid profiles in middle-aged men and women after famine exposure during gestation: the Dutch Hunger Winter Families Study.

BACKGROUND Many studies in humans have related birth weight to lipid profiles in adulthood. Fewer have estimated associations directly attributable to maternal nutrition during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to determine whether famine exposure during gestation is associated with a more atherogenic profile in adult offspring. DESIGN In 2003-2005, we studied 1) 359 singleton men and ...

Serum lipoprotein (a) as an atherosclerosis risk factor in men with androgenic alopecia

Background: The association between coronary artery disease and androgenic alopecia has been demonstrated, but few studies have focused on the mechanism of this association. The aim of this study was to evaluate the lipid profile in male pattern alopecia. Methods: In this case control study, 45 male patients with androgenic alopecia who were aged from 20 to 50 years and 45 men with a norma...

Patterns of Weight Gain and Birth Weight Amongst Indian Women

Background: The timing of maternal weight change in pregnancy may be an important determinant of birth weight. The objective of this study was to measure weight gain patterns from early pregnancy until delivery, and to examine the relationship between prenatal weight gain and low birth weight. Methods: A total of 500 pregnant women within 15-20 days of conception, with confirmed pregnancies and...
